Why I love Havana and you will love it too! The Green House

Havana residents have always felt curiosity about this mansion located on 5th Avenue and 2nd Street in Miramar because of its uninhabited and mysterious appearance.

Therefore, we decided to know its history as it is one of the most striking, luxurious, and captivating mansions in Havana.

The Green House, as is popularly dubbed, was built at the beginning of 20th century and designed by the architect José L. Echarte with german renaissance style. The house has three levels made of marble floors, brick walls, roofs with a steep slope and covered with green tiles as well as a striking dome. Beautiful terrace and gardens bordered the house on one side and at the front.

Regarding the owners of this mansion there are several versions but it is claimed that the last one was Luisa Catalina Rodríguez Faxas who was born in November 1922 in Barcelona, Spain and Cuban nationalized. She belonged to the high society so was related to the most well-off families in Cuba.

She got marriage with Mario Mario Cabrera Saqui, a writer and lawyer, and had three children. After some years, on a trip to Miami Mario died of a heart attack and Luisa return to Cuba with his body. The children remained living in the United States.

Luisa never wanted to leave her home, after her death, having no family remaining in Cuba, the house became in cuban state property, it has been restored and nowadays is a promoting center of modern and contemporary architecture. The first and second floors conserve the distribution of the spaces that show art works from different disciplines with a mixture of contemporary furniture with elements of the past.

From La Casa de Ana you can enjoy a walk by the 5th. Avenue and on the way you will find  La Casa Verde.

Los habaneros siempre hemos sentido curiosidad acerca de esta mansión situada en 5ta Avenida y Calle 2 en Miramar por su apariencia deshabitada y  misteriosa.

Por lo anterior decidimos indagar sobre  su historia por ser una de las Casas mas lujosas, llamativas y cautivadoras de La Habana.

Construida a principios del siglo XX con estilo del renacimiento alemán y diseñada por el arquitecto José L. Echarte, esta edificación consta de tres plantas, pisos de mármol, paredes de ladrillos, techos con una pronunciada  pendiente recubiertos de tejas verdes  así como una llamativa cúpula. Hermoso portal y jardines bordeaban la casa por un costado y por el frente.

Hay varias versiones alrededor de los dueños de esta mansión pero se afirma que su última propietaria hasta el final de su vida fue Luisa Catalina Rodríguez Faxas quien nació en en Barcelona, España en noviembre de 1922 y nacionalizada cubana. Pertenecía a la alta sociedad por lo que se relacionaba con las familias mas acomodadas. 

 Del matrimonio con Mario Mario Cabrera Saqui, escritor y abogado, nacieron tres hijos. Después de algunos años y en un viaje aMiami, Mario murió de un ataque al corazón y Luisa regresó a Cuba con su cuerpo. Los niños se quedaron viviendo en los estados.

Luisa nunca quiso abandonar su morada  y después de su fallecimiento La Casa Verde pasó a ser propiedad del estado cubano, ha sido restaurada y hoy es el centro promotor de la arquitectura moderna y contemporánea. La primera y segunda planta conservan la distribución de los espacios que muestran obras de arte de diferentes disciplinas con una mezcla  de muebles contemporaneos con elementos del pasado.
