馃憤 馃憤 Who is Hamel? 馃憤 馃憤
One of the first alley´s
inhabitants was Fernando Belleau Hamel, a US citizen who bought some area in
Cayo Hueso neighborhood at the beginning of the 20th century. He started up a
raw material and foundry business there and gave work to black and Chinese
population. He even built houses for them for living. That is why this small
street is reminded as El Callej贸n de Hamel.

It is located in Cayo Hueso´s
neighborhood, between Hospital and Aramburu streets, near to El Malec贸n
Habanero.
To speak about Callej贸n de Hamel is to speak about Salvador Gonz谩lez
Escalona, a Cuban sculptor and muralist who transformed this alley into one
of the main centers of Afro-Cuban culture in Havana. Its history goes back to
the 1990s, when this community cultural project began, which has resulted in a
kind of open-air gallery.

You can see walls of colors
and poems, sculptures made by all kind of object such as bicycles, bathtubs... Religion,
Santeria, sculpture, painting, music and poetry... concentrated in just 200
meters from a small alley.
Nowadays, different
activities are organized in El Callej贸n, such as the one that takes place on
Sundays at noon, when Afro-Cuban live music takes over.

Uno de los primeros
habitantes del callej贸n fue Fernando
Belleau Hamel, un ciudadano estadounidense que compr贸 unos terrenos en
la barriada de Cayo Hueso a principios del siglo XX. All铆 puso en marcha un
negocio de materia prima y fundici贸n y dio trabajo a numerosa poblaci贸n negra y
china. Incluso les construy贸 casas para que vivieran. Este hecho hizo que se
recordara al lugar con el nombre de Callej贸n de Hamel.

Est谩
situado en la barriada de Cayo Hueso,
entre las calles Hospital y Aramburu, cerca del Malec贸n Habanero.
Hablar
del Callej贸n de Hamel es hablar de Salvador
Gonz谩lez Escalona, el escultor y muralista cubano que transform贸 esta
peque帽a callejuela en uno de los principales focos de cultura afrocubana que hay en La Habana. Su historia se remonta a los a帽os 1990, cuando empez贸
este proyecto cultural comunitario
que ha dado como resultado una especie de galer铆a al aire libre.

Se
observan muros de colores, poemas, esculturas realizadas por objetos de todo
tipo como bicicletas, ba帽eras, maniqu铆es... Religi贸n, santer铆a, escultura,
pintura, m煤sica y poes铆a... concentradas en apenas 200 metros metros de una
peque帽a callejuela.
Hoy
en d铆a, en el Callej贸n se organizan
distintas actividades, como la que tiene lugar los domingos al mediod铆a,
momento en que la m煤sica afrocubana
en directo toma el lugar.
