Ernest Hemingway was a famous american writer and journalist. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois in July 1899. He is considered one of the best writers of the twenty century and a Nobel Prize winner in Literature in 1954.

Hemingway visited Havana in 1928 for the first time. He fell in love with this city surrounded by the sea. Hemingway came back to Cuba a few years later. He lived at Ambos Mundos Hotel from where he wrote his novel: For Whom the Bell Tolls. He used to walk by Obispo Street to El Floridita, one of his favorites bars in Havana.

Cojimar is a small fishing village located at the east of the Havana. It was in this village where the writer bought his yacht “Pilar”. He used to go fishing on this yacht with his friend Gregorio Fuentes, who was the patron of the boat.

In 1940, Hemingway bought Finca Vigia where he lived for 20 year or more. Finca Vigia is located in the suburbs of Havana in the town of San Francisco de Paula. The house is part of the cultural heritage of Cuba.

Every year in Havana we celebrate The Ernest Hemingway International Billfishing Tournament. It is dedicated to the writer who was the promoter of this event.

Havana and Hemingway are together forever. His memory is immortal as his work. He often mentioned his beloved city in his texts:

«... on a sunset when I went out to walk and observe the flight of the blackbirds…they flew every night to Havana from the southern countryside… the flock of birds rested noisily on the laurels of Prado. "

Ernest Hemingway afamado periodista y escritor es considerado uno de los novelistas m谩s ilustres del siglo XX. Naci贸 en Oak Park, Illinois en Julio de 1899.   

Visit贸  La Habana por primera vez en 1928  y qued贸 prendado de esta ciudad rodeada por el mar. As铆 fu猫 que pocos a帽os m谩s tarde regres贸 a Cuba y se instal贸 en el hotel Ambos Mundos donde escribi贸 la novela “Por qui茅n doblan las campanas” y desde donde transitaba por los sitios de su preferencia tales como El Floridita,  La Bodeguita del Medio entre otros populares  en aquella 茅poca. 

No podemos dejar de mencionar a Coj铆mar, un peque帽o pueblo pesquero situado al este de la ciudad que cautiv贸 al escritor, fu猫 all铆 donde  adquiri贸 el yate “Pilar” en el que sol铆a salir de pesca junto a su amigo Gregorio Fuentes, patr贸n de la embarcaci贸n.

Hemingway compra Finca Vig铆a en 1940 donde residi贸 por m谩s de veinte a帽os.  Situada en el poblado de San Francisco de Paula, en las afueras de La Habana, la casa  forma parte del patrimonio cultural de Cuba.

Cabe destacar que todos los a帽os se celebra en las costas habaneras el Torneo Internacional de Pesca de la Aguja Ernest Hemingway dedicado al  novelista  quien fu猫  promotor de este evento.

Ernest Hemingway y La Habana est谩n unidos por siempre, su recuerdo es imperecedero como su obra en la que en varias ocasiones hizo alusi贸n a su amada ciudad….

«...un atardecer, cuando hab铆a salido al crep煤sculo para caminar y observar el vuelo de los mirlos (sic) que iban a La Habana, a donde volaban todas las noches desde la campi帽a de sur y al este, convergiendo en largas bandadas, para posarse, ruidosamente, en los laureles del Prado».
